Charles F. Chappel

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Charles F. Chappel, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Kadish, Russia, September 27, 1918. Lieutenant Chappel led his men in attack against a superior force of the enemy. Disregarding all personal danger, he personally advanced upon enemy machine guns, then in action, thereby assisting in building up a firing line of the attacking force. He was killed while making this dash.
