    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Horace P. Hobbs, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Pala’s Cotta, Island of Jolo, Philippine Islands, May 5, 1905. With his company (provisional company, 17th Infantry), Lieutenant Hobbs held his command in a position under heavy hostile fire at a range of from 10 to 100 yards from a strong enemy position for more than four hours and gained valuable information as to the enemy’s position by fearlessly exposing himself in climbing a tree to make observations.
