The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to William F. Lewis, Captain (Medical Corps), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Laksamana Usap’s Cotta, island of Jolo, Philippine Islands, January 7, 1905. During the attack on the cotta, Captain Lewis showed great gallantry and courage when he went into the line of fire to the assistance of a badly wounded soldier, whom he rescued and carried to the dressing station, where the man later died.
