The Navy Cross is awarded to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Algernon G. Brumbeloe, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving with the 5th Regiment, U.S. Marines. In the attack at Belleau Wood on June 6, 1918, Pharmacist’s Mate Brumbeloe was with company, which was mistaken in a fog for Germans, and subjected to heavy fire. He brought back a message over a fire swept field, then attended the wounded in a field swept by machine-gun fire, and brought them to shelter. The next day while searching the same field for dead and wounded, he was wounded by a sniper.
