The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Charles W. Bateman, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action near Thiaucourt France, September 12 -15, 1918. Rendering first aid under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire Pharmacist’s Mate Bateman showed utter disregard for his own personal safety, venturing through shelled areas to the assistance of the wounded. He obtained most valuable information for the guidance of stretcher bearers.
