The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Frederick R. Hook, Passed Assistant Surgeon, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Etienne, France, October 4 – 6, 1918. Assistant Surgeon Hook established an advance dressing station in an exposed position under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. He worked fearlessly and unceasingly, giving first aid to the wounded and directing their evacuation, until ordered to move to the rear.
