The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Howard James Childs, Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 83d Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action in the Bois-de-Belleau, France, June 6 – 8, 1918. Corporal Childs, with Corporals Joseph A. Dargis and Benjamin Tilghman, and Private Herman L. McLeod, all of the same company, were prominent in the attack on enemy machine-gun positions in the Bois-de-Belleau on June 6 and 8, 1918; were foremost in their company and at all times acquitted themselves with such distinction that they were an example for the remainder of their command.
