By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant James Hyde (ASN: 540796), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Hyde distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Le Charmel, France, 25 July 1918, in keeping order and discipline although severely affected by high explosive gas so that he could hardly see.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to James Hyde, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action in the Bois-de-Belleau, on June 20, 1918. Sergeant Hyde went out into the open under heavy machine-gun fire to carry in a wounded man. Being unable to pick him up, he lay down, pulled the man on his back, and crawled to his position.
