The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Joe Nichols Viera, Private, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 78th Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near Blanc Mont, France, October 3, 1918. After assisting in the capture of three machine-gun nests, Private Viera, with another soldier, went into a dugout when the occupants refused to come out and captured forty of the enemy.
