    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Joseph B. Carhart, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 55th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near Vierzy, France, July 19, 1918. Second Lieutenant Carhart displayed exceptional bravery in charging three machine guns with a small detachment of his men, killing the crews and capturing the guns, which were immediately turned on the Germans, thereby opening the line for the advance of his company, which had been held up by the enemy’s fire.
