The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star Medal to Thomas E. Shainline (2399720), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company C, 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, 3d Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on June 1, 1969. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Private First Class Shainline upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
