    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Sergeant. Wiltshire C. Davis (ASN: 1288664), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Sergeant. Davis distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Haumont, France, 11 October 1918, in reorganizing his company and leading it forward in the attack.

    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Wiltshire C. Davis, First Sergeant., U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Haumont, France, October 11, 1918. After the loss of all his officers and his company was becoming disorganized, Sergeant Davis took command and reassembled the company, bringing it to the objective at the most opportune moment. He commanded for a period of eleven days thereafter and successfully continued the operations by his leadership and exceptional courage under fire.
