Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class: For gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Corpsman with the 5th Marines, 2d Division, A.E.F., on November 10, 1918 at Meuse-Argonne, France.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Ernest B. Ball, Pharmacist’s Mate, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Etienne, France, October 3, 1918. Pharmacist’s Mate Ball continually exposed himself to severe machine-gun and artillery fire while dressing and carrying wounded soldiers belonging to the unit to which he was attached.

The Navy Cross is awarded to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Ernest B. Ball, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the U.S. Marines at the front at Mont Blanc Ridge and in the Argonne offensive. Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Ball showed exceptional braver and devotion to duty by dressing wounded men under continuous machine gun and artillery fire.
