    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private James Granville Thompson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 1 April 1865, while serving with Company K, 4th New York Heavy Artillery, in action at White Oak Road, Virginia. Private Thompson made a hazardous reconnaissance through timber and slashings, preceding the Union line of battle, signaling the troops and leading them through the obstructions.
