The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private James Hezikiah Luther, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 3 May 1863, while serving with Company D, 7th Massachusetts Infantry, in action at Fredericksburg, Virginia. Among the first to jump into the enemy’s rifle pits, Private Luther himself captured and brought out three prisoners.
