The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private John Gray, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 9 June 1862, while serving with Company B, 5th Ohio Infantry, in action at Port Republic, Virginia. Private Gray mounted an artillery horse of the enemy and captured a brass 6-pound piece in the face of the enemy’s fire and brought it to the rear.
