The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private John Kennedy, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 11 June 1864, while serving with Company M, 2d U.S. Artillery, in action at Trevilian Station, Virginia. Private Kennedy remained at his gun, resisting with its implements the advancing cavalry, and thus secured the retreat of his detachment.
