    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Leverett Mansfield Kelley, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 25 November 1863, while serving with Company A, 36th Illinois Infantry, in action at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee. Sergeant Kelley sprang over the works just captured from the enemy, and calling upon his comrades to follow, rushed forward in the face of a deadly fire and was among the first over the works on the summit, where he compelled the surrender of a Confederate officer and received his sword.
