    War Department, General Orders No. 45 (December 31, 1864)

    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Chief Boatswain’s Mate Andrew Jones, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action, serving as Chief Boatswain’s Mate on board the U.S. Ironclad, Chickasaw, Mobile Bay, Alabama, 5 August 1864. Although his enlistment was up, Chief Boatswain’s Mate Jones volunteered for the battle of Mobile Bay, going on board the Chickasaw from the Vincennes where he then carried out his duties gallantly throughout the engagement with the enemy which resulted in the capture of the rebel ram Tennessee.
