The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant George Evans Davis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 9 July 1864, while serving with Company D, 10th Vermont Infantry, in action at Monocacy, Maryland. While in command of a small force, First Lieutenant Davis held the approaches to the two bridges against repeated assaults of superior numbers, thereby materially delaying Early’s advance on Washington.
