The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain Henry Algernon DuPont, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 19 October 1864, while serving with 5th U.S. Artillery, in action at Cedar Creek, Virginia. By his distinguished gallantry, and voluntary exposure to the enemy’s fire at a critical moment, when the Union line had been broken, Captain DuPont encouraged his men to stand to their guns, checked the advance of the enemy, and brought off most of his pieces.
