Philipsen, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 29 September 1879, while serving with Company D, 5th U.S. Cavalry, in action at Milk River, Colorado. With nine others Blacksmith Philipsen voluntarily attacked and captured a strong position held by Indians.
