    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Richard P. Hanley, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 25 June 1876, while serving with Company C, 7th U.S. Cavalry, in action at Little Big Horn, Montana. Sergeant Hanley recaptured, single-handed, and without orders, within the enemy’s lines and under a galling fire lasting some 20 minutes, a stampeded pack mule loaded with ammunition.
