George D. Moore, Jr.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Infantry Headquarters and Headquarters Company 2d Battalion (Airmobile) 502d Infantry, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 17 June 1969. Lieutenant Colonel Moore distinguished himself while serving as Commanding Officer, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 502d Infantry, during a mortar attack at Fire Support Base Currahee, Republic of Vietnam. The amount and accuracy of the enemy fire forced all person­nel in the command post to take cover, leaving many of the wounded lying helplessly in the open. Colonel Moore left the tactical oper­ations center and moved through the mortar fire in order to carry wounded soldiers from the killing zone to safety. Throughout the en­tire two hour attack he repeatedly moved casualties to the safety of the aid station or the operations center. As he pulled the wounded in, he used his body as a shield until such time as he was able to get the man to a safe area. When the tactical operations center began taking direct hits, he remained in an uncovered position in order to direct aerial rocket artillery and counter mortar fire. His courageous actions contributed significantly to the successful defense of the fire base.  Lieutenant Colonel Moore’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
