Henry R. Strobo

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Henry R. Strobo, Sergeant (Then Specialist Four), U.S. Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Specialist Four Strobo distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 23 February 1969 at Dau Tieng Base Camp. Shortly after midnight the camp came under a rocket, mortar and ground attack. Two men began performing crater analysis along the perimeter to determine the location of the enemy launching sites, but were struck from all sides by Viet Cong who had penetrated the perimeter defenses and were pinned down in a bunker by a deadly bombardment of automatic weapons fire, hand grenades, rocket-propelled grenades and satchel charges. Specialist Strobo and four other men immediately volunteered to go to the aid of their comrades. Jumping into a truck, they drove to within fifty meters of the bunker and were then forced to continue on foot because of the intense hostile fire. As Specialist Strobo courageously made his way through a hail of bullets, he was mortally wounded by the enemy fusillade. Specialist Four Strobo’s gallantry in action, at the cost of his life, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
