Irvin F. Otto, Jr.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Irvin F. Otto Jr., Sergeant, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Otto distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 20 June 1969, while serving as a squad leader with Company D, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry during a combat mission in Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Otto’s company had been assigned the mission of defending Landing Zone Ike when it was assaulted by an estimated enemy battalion. During the assault, the enemy had infiltrated a portion of the defensive perimeter and were attempting to occupy several bunkers. As Sergeant Otto maneuvered his squad towards the berm, three men were wounded. With disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Otto continued towards the bunker unassisted. Disregarding the fact that his rifle was no longer functioning, Sergeant Otto moved within range to throw grenades. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
