James R. Jester

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Warrant Officer (WO-1) James R. Jester, United States Army. For gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force: Warrant Officer Jester distinguished himself while serving as a aircraft commander of a UH-1C armed helicopter when BIen Hoa Air Force Base came under heavy rocket and mortar fire, coupled with a fierce enemy ground thrust. Immediately upon locating the launching positions, he reamed them with rocket and machine gun fire. Undaunted by enemy sniper fire, he continued his attacks until the positions were destroyed. He then returned to Bien Hoa, rearmed and refueled his aircraft, and was airborne again in a matter of minutes. He then sighted and searched out multitudinous enemy positions while flying at low altitude and airspeed, despite being a continuous target for enemy automatic weapons fire. He continued to engage the insurgents until virtually all resistance had ceased. He contributed immeasurably to the killing of 177 enemy and the successful defensive effort. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
