The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Joel M. Boxer, First Lieutenant Infantry United States Army Company C, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Boxer distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 22 June 1968, while serving as a platoon leader with Company C, 1st Battalion 12th Cavalry during a search and destroy mission in Nam Noa Province, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force and sustained several casualties, Lieutenant Boxer exposed himself to the hostile fire as he crossed an open in order to assist in evacuating several of his seriously wounded comrades to safety. His actions were directly responsible for saving the lives of his injured comrades. First Lieutenant Boxer’s gallant actions is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
