John JOHN Rath

For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four Rath distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 28 June 1968, while serving as a medical aidman with Troop B, 3d Squadron, 5th Cavalry during a combat mission near Binh An, Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Rath observed a fellow soldier wandering about in shock; he rushed through withering crossfire, both enemy and friendly, to render assistance. After recovering the injured comrade, Specialist Rath determined that other members of the track from which this individual had wandered were wounded. Again he left his track in search of the missing crewmen, and again he crossed the killing zone. There he located the driver in the disabled vehicle and rendered first aid to him. Noting that still a second cremember was unlocated, Specialist Bath returned to his platoon leader through the heavy fire to request assistance in the search, and then led the successful search team. His disregard for his own safety resulted in saving the lives of three men. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
