Kenneth L. Eichholz

By direction of the President of the United States under the provisions of the Act of Congress approved 2 July 1926. For Gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 14 May 1969. Specialist Eichholz distinguished himself while serving as a medical aidman in Company C, 3d Battalion (Airmobile), 187th Infantry, during a combat assault on Dong Ap Bia Mountain in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. A North Vietnamese Army regiment was well-entrenched on the mountain, and the allied forces had received several casualties as a result of the intense enemy fire. Specialist Eichholz made numerous trips across an unprotected area to reach wounded personnel. In two instances he carried injured men through the hostile fire to safety. He was instrumental in organizing men to carry the stretcher patients to an evacuation site, while at the same time administering first aid. Specialist Eichholz continued to ignore the enemy fire as he repeatedly cross open terrain to aid the wounded. His courageous actions minimized the severity of the casualties sustained and added immeasurably to the morale of the platoon. Specialist Eichholz’ personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Military.
