Leon D. Bullock

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Leon D. Bullock, Sergeant E5, Troop A, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry, Americal Division APO 96374, for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Bullock distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 14 September 1968 while serving as an armored vehicle commander with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry. On that date, A Troop was engaged on a combat sweep near Quang Ngai. A helicopter from F Troop was shot down in a heavily wooded area. Immediately, the crew came under an intense hail of enemy automatic weapons fire. Sergeant Bullock, realizing that the crew was defenseless, immediately organized his scout section and assaulted across an open rice paddy into the heavily fortified enemy position. Although his vehicle was hit many times by the hostile fire, Sergeant Bullock continued his assault on the hostile until he was mortally wounded His valorous actions broke the enemy defenses, allowing the remainder of his platoon to overrun the hostile position. Sergeant Bullock’s extraordinary heroism, unselfish concern for his fellow soldiers, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
