Phillip M. Zook

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Philip M. Zook, First Lieutenant Infantry, United States Army Company C, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 7th Cavalry for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile enemy force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Zook distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 26 April 1970 in the Republic of Vietnam. While going to the aid of another platoon in heavy contact with an undetermined size enemy force, First Lieutenant Zook’s platoon came under heavy rocket and machine gun fire. Despite the intense fire, First Lieutenant Zook unhesitatingly moved to the point of heaviest contact and effectively directed the counter fire of his men. With complete disregard for his own safety, First Lieutenant Zook continued to perform in a professional and valiant manner as he braved the heavy enemy fire while accurately laying down a devastating blanket of protective fire as the wounded soldiers were moved to a safer area. Despite painful wounds, First Lieutenant Zook remained under fire until all the wounded men had been medically evacuated and the determined enemy force had been neutralized. His gallantry in action and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
