Robert ROBERT Turay

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class, Robert Turay, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Turay distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 26 August 1969, while serving as assistant gunner with Company E, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry in Binh Long Province, Republic of Vietnam. When the base came under a violent rocket and mortar attack, Private First Class Turay immediately moved to his mortar emplacement and began placing a tremendous volume of fire on suspected enemy positions. Moments later three enemy rounds impacted on his mortar emplacement throwing him to the ground and all but destroying his pit. Stunned, he courageously pulled himself from the wreckage, aided the gunner in readjusting the tube and again began placing destructive fire upon the enemy, in spite of the continued enemy fire impacting throughout the firebase. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
