Ronald D. Miller

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Four Ronald D. Miller, United States Army. For gallantry in action involving close combat with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Specialist Four Miller distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 25 March 1969 while serving as a Squad Leader with Company B, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry, on a reconnaissance in force mission near Fire Support Base Danger. When the enemy initiated an ambush on the platoon, three of the four pointmen were wounded, two of them mortally. Specialist Miller, disregarding his own safety, boldly ran through an open area to reach his fallen comrade. He skillfully rendered what medical assistance he could, then began pulling the man back to the rear, only to be wounded himself by fragments from an exploding rocket propelled grenade. Ignoring his painful multiple wounds, Specialist Miller selflessly continued his mission until the relative safety of the rear was reached. There he refused to be evacuated and valiantly insisted on staying to aid and evacuate other wounded men. Specialist Four Miller’s extraordinary heroism in close combat with an armed hostile force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
