    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to David J. Brickley, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Verdun, France, October 23 – 24, 1918. Stubbornly resisting three strong enemy counterattacks, Lieutenant Brickley, without aid, went forward and by effective machine- gun fire drove the enemy from and captured a strong pill box which had been raising havoc in our ranks.
