United Nations Operations in Somalia II

United Nations Operations in Somalia II (1993–1995), commonly known as UNOSOM II, was a multinational peace enforcement mission launched to restore stability in Somalia amid civil war, famine, and the collapse of central government authority. Expanding on earlier humanitarian efforts, the operation sought to disarm rival factions, protect relief operations, and help rebuild political institutions. U.S. forces played a major role, including participation in high-risk missions targeting warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid, culminating in the October 1993 Battle of Mogadishu. Mounting casualties and political challenges ultimately led to the withdrawal of U.S. and UN forces, leaving Somalia’s broader instability unresolved.
