Darago, Jr. (33731341), Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 143d Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion (Mobile), attached to the 40th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 19 December 1944, in Belgium. During a strong German counteroffensive, the rumbling of an indeterminate number of hostile tanks was heard approaching Private Darago's 90-mm. gun position. When an Infantry officer from an adjacent unit suddenly appeared in search of two rocket launcher gunners, Private Darago was one of two men to volunteer for the dangerous mission of stopping the tank advance. Although he was unfamiliar with the weapon, he courageously crawled to within forty yards of the tanks. Ignoring the devastating machine gun fire placed upon him, he fired a rocket and scored a direct hit. He returned to the officer to have his weapon reloaded and with undiminished daring crawled back to his original position and, while subjected to intense machine gun fire, scored a second hit and completely destroyed the tank. Private Darago's great valor, outstanding personal courage and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 40th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Samuel C. Davis (34603829), Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 737th Tank Battalion, in action against enemy forces on 17 July 1944, in the vicinity of St. Lo, France. On that date Sergeant Davis, whose tank battalion was working with infantry in attacking Hill 122, observed that some of his unit's fire was inadvertently being directed near our own infantry men who had advanced further than expected. Radio communications between tanks had been completely disrupted by very heavy enemy artillery fire. Sergeant Davis stopped his fire, left his tank and ran across the field under heavy machine gun and artillery fire to another tank, jumped up on the back of it, and advised the tank commander to cease fire. He then ran across the field to another tank, and in a similar manner had that tank commander cease fire. While on the back of this tank, Sergeant DAVIS was killed by enemy machine gun fire. By this time the rest of his unit had noticed that the three tanks had stopped firing, and they also ceased their fire. Sergeant Davis' heroic sacrifice and devotion to duty were instrumental in saving the lives of many of his comrades. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

During a determined enemy attack near Oberwampach, Luxembourg, the tank in which Private First Class Davis served as a cannoneer and leader, was set on fire by two direct artillery hits, forcing the crew to take cover. When the tank ceased to burn, Private First Class Davis voluntarily made his way through withering fire to the vehicle, mounted it and repaired the damaged guns. When the enemy advanced to within machine gun range he opened fire, decimating their ranks and forcing them to withdraw. Later he assembled a crew and drove the tank into action which resulted in the destruction of an enemy tank. DAWSON, JOSEPH T.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Joseph T. Dawson (0-452348), Captain (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer, Company G, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, in France. Captain Dawson, in the initial landing on the coast of France, disembarked under a hail of enemy machine gun and rifle fire and, with utmost calmness, proceeded to organized a large group of men who were floundering near their bullet-riddled craft and led them ashore. However, upon reaching the beach, he found that his company was pinned down by direct fire from three enemy machine guns which were placed in an enemy strongpoint in a cliff immediately beyond the heavily mined sands. With absolute disregard for his own personal safety, Captain Dawson moved from his position of cover on to the mine field deliberately drawing the fire of the enemy machine guns in order that his men might be free to move. This heroic diversion succeeded and his combat group crossed the beach to move into the assault on the enemy strongpoint. During this action, Captain Dawson was wounded in the leg. In a superb display of courage in the face of heavy enemy fire, Captain Dawson although wounded, led a successful attack into the enemy stronghold. Captain Dawson's outstanding leadership, gallantry and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Dawson (32120265), Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 19th Tank Battalion, 9th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 28 December 1944, in Belgium. During fierce action near Sibret, Belgium, the tank commanded by Sergeant Dawson was hit and set on fire. The sergeant dismounted and fought the blaze even though he was completely exposed to intense enemy artillery, machine gun and small arms fire. Failing to bring the fire under control, he courageously remounted the tank and succeeded in extricating two of the crew members through the front hatches even though machine gun and anti-tank fire was striking the vehicle all about him. In a final courageous effort to rescue the remaining crew members he climbed to the turret, but as he lowered himself into the burning tank the enemy scored two direct artillery hits and he was killed. Sergeant Dawson nobly gave his life for his comrades and his courage and complete devotion to duty live on as a constant inspiration to those with whom he served. Citation:
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Robert L. Deckard (15099076), Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 502d Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 22 September 1945, in the vicinity of Saint Oedenrode, Holland. As the lead scout for an infantry platoon Private First Class Deckard was forward of the main body when it became pinned down by enemy machine gun and 88-mm. fire. Private First Class Deckard was wounded while exposing himself in order to locate the machine gun. Disregarding his wound, he continued forward and hurled a grenade which destroyed the enemy gun and killed most of its crew. Discovering the location of an enemy 88-mm. gun, Private First Class Deckard continued forward with a grenade in each hand. He hurled the grenade at the enemy gun emplacement, killing its entire crew and several of the enemy nearby. Immediately following this action, he was mortally wounded by an enemy sniper. His exceptional fortitude, initiative and unswerving devotion to duty gave inspiration to his comrades to emulate and were a great contribution to the defeat of the enemy in that sector. DESHAYES, ALBERT P.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Albert P. Deshayes, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 517th Parachute Combat Team, in action against enemy forces in August 1944, in France. After his jump into enemy-held territory in Southern France on 15 August 1944, Corporal Deshayes found himself separated from other parachutists of his unit. Through his own initiative and resourcefulness, he contacted the French underground. In the following days Corporal Deshayes led patrols of F.F.I. men which captured 29 Germans and killed many more. On one occasion he and another American set up an ambush for enemy patrol and completely wiped it out, killing 20 Germans in the one trap. Later, when the commanding officer of the German-held garrison of La Roche announced he was ready to talk terms of surrender, Corporal Deshayes was one of the three men to go to the meeting, despite the possibility of a trap. During the negotiations, which lasted approximately three hours, Corporal Deshayes stood guard outside the building opposite ten German guards. Although the building was under constant American artillery fire, Corporal Deshayes remained at his post until negotiations were complete. The surrender of the garrison resulted in the capture of 174 prisoners, 15 machine guns, two 20-mm. guns, and 175 rifles. When his platoon was suddenly attacked by superior numbers of heavily armed Germans, Private First Class Dickerson courageously poured accurate automatic rifle fire into the attacking enemy to cover his platoon's withdrawal. Ignoring the mortar and small arms fire directed at him, he remained steadfast and continued his harassing fire until his platoon had safely retired. On the following day, the Germans launched another vicious attack. From a previously selected position, Private First Class Dickerson awaited the enemy's approach. As they came within close range, he delivered deadly fire into the surprised troops, forcing them to retreat. Reorganizing quickly, the enemy again attacked and, upon locating Private First Class Dickerson's position, concentrated their fire upon him. Heroically, this valiant soldier remained at his post and took a heavy toll of lives with his accurate and intense fire before he was mortally wounded. DILBECK, WALTER J., JR.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Walter J. Dilbeck, Jr., Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 253d Infantry Regiment, in action against enemy forces on 6 April 1945, in the vicinity of Buchhof, Germany. When his company was hit from two sides by a strong and determined enemy force of over two hundred SS troops, Private First Class Dilbeck observed that panic was running wild among our troops. Everyone just took off for the rear allowing the enemy forces to move into the foxholes as fast as they were vacated. From this new position the Germans poured out a deadly stream of automatic and small arms fire causing terrific casualties among the Americans and giving them no chance to reorganize. Realizing that something had to be done to stop the enemy attack, Private First Class Dilbeck stopped voluntarily on a bare knoll and began to pour deadly automatic rifle fire into the ranks of the charging SS troops. With conspicuous gallantry and determination he stood his ground even through all the fire power of the enemy was almost upon him, but he continued to fire as fast as he could change magazines. The enemy attack finally stalled because of their terrible losses. Private First Class Dilbeck had killed or wounded over sixty of the SS troops. Because of his indomitable courage and fearless tenacity, Private First Class Dilbeck saved the lives of many of his comrades and made it possible for his company to withdraw successfully, reorganize and hold its new position. Private First Class Dilbeck's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Dominick DiTullio (33037230), Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, in France. Private First Class DiTullio, while a member of a wire section which had advanced three hundred yards beyond the front lines in attempting to establish contact with a forward unit, volunteered to lead the Communications Officer forward for further information and immediately set out in the lead of the party. After covering considerable territory in advance of the front line under heavy firing from friendly and enemy troops, they determined that the company they were seeking had withdrawn and, while returning, came upon two trucks loaded with Germans. Private First Class DiTullio, without a moment's hesitation, opened fire on the enemy, and forced them to take cover, thereby preventing their discovering the weakness of the party. After killing one German and forcing two to surrender, he advanced with fixed bayonet across the open road to make sure that all the enemy had withdrawn and then remained behind to cover the continued withdrawal of his own party. When the Germans drove cattle down the road in an attempt to detonate a mined roadblock, Private First Class DiTullio cam out of his cover, turned the cattle back and hand grenaded the Germans behind him. He then reached the Battalion Aid Station which was under hostile fire so severe as to prevent aid men from securing necessary water. Without thought of his own safety, he crossed the fire-swept area to a pump and was killed in the act of pumping water for the assistance of his comrades. The high courage and absolute contempt for danger shown by Private First Class DiTullio made him an inspiring example of fortitude and heroism for his entire unit. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 82d Airborne Division, and the United States Army.

Doan, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 32d Armored Regiment, 3d Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 30 July 1944, in France. Lieutenant Colonel Doan was commanding a coordinated tank, infantry and engineer force attacking to establish a bridgehead across the Seine River. The high ground at the designated crossing spot was strongly held by the enemy and in attempting to cross the river, the infantry was pinned down by intense enemy machine gun and artillery fire. Heavy fire from enemy 88-mm. guns made it impossible for our tanks to advance. Realizing the importance of forcing a crossing without delay, Lieutenant Colonel Doan went to the front line, dismounted his tank and in the face of intense enemy automatic weapons and rifle fire, waded across the river to make a reconnaissance of the crossing point. He then returned and personally led the leading elements in the attack across the river. The personal bravery and courageous leadership displayed by Lieutenant Colonel Doan was an inspiration to his command and exemplified the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States, reflecting great credit upon himself, the 3d Armored Division, and the United States Army.

DOBRENCHUK, GREGORY G.

Gregory G. Dobrenchuk, 0388359, 2nd Lieut., B-17 Provisional Squadron, Air Corps, United States Army. For extraordinary heroism while participating in aerial flights between Bataan, Luzon, Phillipine Islands, Malang, Deen Pasar Java, and Del Monte, Mindanao, Phillipine Islands, and Singapore during the period March 10, 1942 to April 29, 1942. Lt. Dobrenchuk, made several round trips in an obsolete poorly armed B-17 evacuating personnel and delivering badly needed supplies and medicine as well as attacking enemy naval vessels and warships. These flights were made at night under adverse weather conditions, with no navigational aids, and over territory in possession of the enemy and dominated by enemy air patrols. On his last mission his aircraft was completely destroyed by enemy aerial attack.

DOCK, LOWELL L.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lowell L. Dock (35270134), Technician Fourth Grade, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Division Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, in France. Technician Fourth Grade Dock landed on D-Day with an infantry combat team. As this time the beach was under extremely heavy enemy fire. He immediately crawled to an exposed position and commenced firing his rifle on a machine gun emplacement that was directing intense fire on the troops landing on the beach. Shortly thereafter, Technician Fourth Grade Dock rejoined his battalion command post. Although wire laying was not his duty, he voluntarily left his sheltered position and laid wire across the fire-swept beach to the infantry combat team command post. While laying wire, Technician Fourth Grade Dock, despite intense enemy fire and without regard for his own safety, helped pull a wounded man off the beach to a place of safety. During the rest of the fire fight, he continually crossed and re-crossed the beach to repair breaks in the line. Technician Fourth Grade Dock's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Mere Eglise, France. When a counterattack against the enemy was planned, Lieutenant Doerfler volunteered to guide four tanks into position against the enemy. Upon reaching the line of departure, machine gun fire caused the tanks to halt. Lieutenant Doerfler went forward alone and destroyed the enemy position. He then removed a mine barrier and continued to lead the tanks forward. Reaching a hedgerow he made a reconnaissance and discovered an enemy strongpoint. Lieutenant Doerfler moved to a flank position and emptied his Thompson submachine gun along the hedgerow, causing complete disruption of the enemy. He then led the tanks through the area and by his indomitable leadership and courage caused a group of enemy estimated at a company to surrender. His extraordinary heroism and leadership contributed materially to the reduction of the enemy salient at Ste. Mere Eglise and exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States, reflecting great credit upon himself, the 82d Airborne Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Eddie Dolenc (38083443), Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 16 December 1944, in Germany. Upon observing that the left flank position of his platoon had been cut off by the enemy, Technical Sergeant Dolenc made his way to the company command post where he secured a machine gun. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved toward the enemy and, under the covering fire of three comrades, mounted his weapon in plain view of the enemy. As the enemy advanced toward him, Technical Sergeant Dolenc heroically fired his machine gun in free traverse, killing or wounding an estimated thirty Germans and forcing the remainder to withdraw. During a lull in the firefight, Technical Sergeant Dolenc ordered his comrades to rejoin his platoon while he remained alone in his precarious position. The enemy launched a vicious assault upon him, but Technical Sergeant Dolenc remained steadfast and was last seen pouring a hail of bullets into the charging Germans. Sergeant Dolenc's indomitable fighting spirit, great personal bravery and unflinching devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 99th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

DOUGHTY, EDWARD DOUGLAS
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Edward Douglas Doughty, First Lieutenant (Field Artillery), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Battery C, 947th Field Artillery Battalion, in action against enemy forces on 28 & 29 May 1944, on Biak Island, Schouten Group. When the enemy had isolated an infantry battalion on a narrow coastal strip and was delivering heavy fire from caves in the cliff above, First Lieutenant Doughty volunteered to go forward by boat to join the isolated unit and give them relief from counterattacks by directing artillery fire. He accomplished the landing despite heavy enemy fire and joining the advance elements climbed on top of the lead tank which was drawing mortar and machine gun fire, to register the fire of his artillery. As enemy fire increased, all personnel outside the tanks moved away except First Lieutenant Doughty who left the tank an advanced several more yards to get better observation. His disregard for his personal safety was responsible for the accurate fire from his artillery guns that broke the attack. Later the situation became acute, and in order to effect a withdrawal it was necessary for the infantry troops to fight their way a distance of two miles. First Lieutenant Doughty placed himself with the element of the rearguard nearest the enemy and under exceptionally heavy enemy fire accurately directed his artillery fire, which permitted the safe withdrawal of the infantry. First Lieutenant Doughty's courage and coolness on this occasion were of great assistance to our forces. His inspiring leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

DOWTHITT, JOHN A.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to John A. Dowthitt, Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 10 February 1945, at Manila, Philippine Islands. After an early morning amphibious assault on Provisor Island against enemy machine gun fire, Private Dowthitt and another soldier undertook to evacuate three of their wounded companions. Taking the most seriously wounded in their boat they paddled back across the fifty-yard wide estuary, occasionally maneuvering their boat to push the boat which was paddled by the other two wounded men. Enemy machine gun fire badly damaged both boats and sprayed the water around them but they succeeded in reaching the shelter of a curve in the Estero de Paco and delivered the casualties to the Command Post. Upon receipt of word that another man had been badly wounded, Private Dowthitt and his companion again volunteered to attempt the dangerous double crossing. Selecting an undamaged boat they took with them a mortar squad and a load of ammunition to reinforce the group on the island. Despite continued enemy fire from three machine guns which again riddled their boat, they successfully completed the trip, bringing back two wounded men. Totally defenseless while exposed to the hostile fire on these crossings, Private Dowthitt displayed extraordinary heroism and at the risk of his life assisted in evacuating five wounded comrades to safety. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to William J. Draper (32602558), Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, 2d Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 11 August 1944, in France. Private Draper was part of a reconnaissance patrol dispatched to determine the strength of the enemy, when stiff resistance was encountered and the patrol's position became extremely precarious. Private Draper voluntarily covered the withdrawal of the patrol until his own position was threatened by a flanking attack. He climbed an embankment and, in plain view of the assaulting troops, fired his light machine gun from the hip, pinning the enemy to the ground. Though wounded, Private Draper remained steadfast and poured a deadly hail of fire into the enemy, thus permitting his patrol to return. Dreher, Jr. (35051852), Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 2d Ranger Infantry Battalion, in action against enemy forces on 7 June 1944, in France. While advancing as the point of a column into a village, Private First Class Dreher met point blank machine gun fire. Without hesitation he moved forward and destroyed this enemy machine gun. He continued to move into the village and was suddenly subjected to a barrage of enemy mortar and small arms fire. He engaged the enemy in this uneven fire fight, killing two enemy riflemen and remained at this advanced position until the enemy withdrew. Duchow (0-1293930), First Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces on 27 November 1944, at Leyte, Philippine Islands. Lieutenant Duchow's platoon, with a section of light machine guns, were in an outpost position in defense of a ridge which had been secured at dusk. During the night the enemy who were entrenched in a dense bamboo thicket a few yards to the front of the position, launched a strong attack, preceded by a mortar barrage. When the platoon on his right received successive rushes by a superior force and were withdrawing in disorder, Lieutenant Duchow, on his own initiative left a place of comparative safety, rallied the men of the withdrawing platoon in spite of darkness and enemy fire, and superbly led and directed them in orderly withdrawal and establishment of a line approximately fifty yards to the rear. He then directed the movement of a light machine gun to a position to protect the ensuing gap and covered the shift by fire from his own rifle. Realizing that the present line could not be safely held, Lieutenant Duchow ordered a withdrawal of his platoon and with reckless disregard for his personal safety, remained in an exposed position and effectively covered the withdrawal to the new line. While performing this self-sacrificing mission, to ensure the safe movement of his men, he killed fifteen of the enemy before they overran his position and he received a mortal wound. His courageous and intrepid actions, which cost him his life, resulted in the saving of many lives and was an inspiration to all. Lieutenant Duchow's unimpeachable valor and extraordinary heroism in close combat against hostile forces were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

In the course of pursuing this mission, Major Dunham was killed. That Major Dunham volunteered to seek reinforcements for his Headquarters in the face of almost certain death was an inspiration to the men and officers of his regiment. With help of three enlisted men, Second Lieutenant Dushane entered the lighthouse on the Kasba-Mehdia after crossing enemy barbed wire entanglements while under heavy enemy small arms fire and captured 12 hostile troops who were using machine guns and rifles. This enabled our troops to take the strategic position commanded by the lighthouse. He later demonstrated coolness and bravery beyond the call of duty when upon the withdrawal of our troops from the native village, he and Corporal Frank L. Czar manned an enemy anti-tank gun in full view of the enemy. Part of the breech of the gun had been removed and he was able to fire the gun only by firing bullets from his sub-machine gun into the base of the anti-tank shell. Meanwhile Corporal Czar aimed the gun. In this manner he destroyed one enemy tank and delayed the enemy attack. It was while operating this gun that Second Lieutenant Dushane lost his life.
