The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Clarence Lackner (37294956), Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 26 November 1944, in Germany. When his company was halted by superior enemy fire, Technical Sergeant Lackner moved through intense hostile fire and located two friendly tanks. From an exposed position atop one of the tanks, he guided them toward the hostile positions and directed devastating fire upon the emplacement. As the tanks moved forward, Technical Sergeant Lackner, armed with a submachine gun, personally killed nine Germans attempting a bold maneuver. Observing a wounded soldier in direct line of hostile automatic rifle fire, Technical Sergeant Lackner dismounted from the tank, moved through the withering fire and evacuated the wounded man to safety. Technical Sergeant Lackner's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Joseph R. Lacy (0-525094), First Lieutenant (Chaplain), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Chaplain with the 5th Ranger Infantry Battalion, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, in France. In the invasion of France, Chaplain Lacy landed on the beach with one of the leading assault units. Numerous casualties had been inflicted by the heavy rifle, mortar, artillery and rocket fire of the enemy. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved about the beach, continually exposed to enemy fire, and assisted wounded men from the water's edge to the comparative safety of a nearby sea wall, and at the same time inspired the men to similar disregard for the enemy fire. Chaplain Lacy's heroic and dauntless actions exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Raymond T. Lahar, First Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 9 November 1944, at Vanemont. While leading an assault force in an attack on a stubbornly defended enemy held hill, Lieutenant Lahar led his men in destroying the hostile outposts. By executing a brilliant outflanking maneuver, he took the enemy force completely by surprise and inflicted heavy casualties. When the enemy moved up reinforcements and infiltrated back into their original positions, Lieutenant Lahar, with complete disregard for his personal safety, made a lone reconnaissance of the enemy positions. Although he was severely wounded in both legs by hostile automatic weapons fire, he ordered a litter to be built and continued to command his group. Several hours later contact was reestablished with another friendly unit and the patrol was saved. Although one bridge had been successfully destroyed the other was still usable. Realizing that this bridge must be completely destroyed, Lieutenant Lamm completely disregarding personal safety, laid the charges and detonated them in the face of heavy enemy fire. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Alden S. Lance, Captain (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 2 February 1944, near Cassino, Italy. Captain Lance personally led his company in a smashing attack that completely disrupted enemy hill positions. On the following morning the enemy launched a counterattack in strength. Captain Lance again unhesitatingly exposed himself to withering machine gun fire in order to direct the elements of his company. As the enemy attack increased in intensity, his company was forced to withdraw approximately two hundred yards. Determined to hold his position, Captain Lance stemmed the retreat, reorganized his units, and personally directed the activities of individual members of his company, as well as those of a platoon of another company. His courageous and inspiring leadership prompted his men to regain the lost ground and inflict heavy casualties on the enemy. During repeated German counterattacks he attended to the evacuation of the wounded, adjusted artillery fire from hazardous forward positions and courageously led his men in repelling the enemy. Captain Lance's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty set an inspiring example for his men and exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States, reflecting great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Shirley R. Landon (0-1301165), Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant], U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 19 December 1944, near Berg, Germany. After assuming command of his unit when the company commander became a casualty a few hours earlier, Captain Landon led an attack on the Siegfried Line. Under extremely heavy mortar, automatic-weapons, and small-arms fire which pinned down his men, he rushed back to friendly tank destroyers and led them forward to crush barbed wire barriers and enable his troops to advance against enemy pillboxes and supporting trenches. Remaining continually at the head of his company, he exhorted it in vicious hand-to-hand fighting. He moved from pillbox to pillbox firing his submachine gun and pistol through their slits. He stormed trenches with gallant disregard for his own safety. When his ammunition was expended, he picked up a weapon from the battlefield and carried on, urging his command to tremendous efforts. When a German gunner rushed from a pillbox and shot his runner and radio operator, Lieutenant Landon killed him with a grenade. Remaining in an exposed position, he repaired the radio and restored contact with his battalion commander. As the enemy withdrew, a concentration of hostile artillery and mortar fire struck the position. Following the barrage, a numerically superior force of German infantry supported by tank destroyers counterattacked. Captain Landon, although greatly handicapped by the loss of key personnel, directed a stand which repulsed the enemy with severe losses. The intrepid leadership, courage, and initiative of Lieutenant Landon and his disregard for his life so inspired his men that they were able successfully to attack a powerful enemy position, take it, and repel a determined counterthrust by superior enemy forces. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Milton J. Landry, Major (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 2d Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 15 December 1943, near San Pietro Infine, Italy. Lieutenant Colonel Landry leading his battalion in the attack on the enemy-held town of San Pietro Infine, was met with strong enemy opposition, and heavy casualties, caused by intense, accurate enemy cross-fire, halted the advance. Braving a veritable hail of artillery and small arms fire, Lieutenant Colonel Landry reorganized his force. Displaying utter fearlessness, he moved around among the forward elements of his command and just after dark personally led a second assault mission. This, too, was stopped by enemy fire and minefields. During the remainder of the night he made two reconnaissance trips within the enemy lines and was wounded in the hand. He reorganized his battalion, now greatly reduced in strength, and made two other attacks, finally reaching the objective with seven officers and thirty-two enlisted men. With the coming of day-light, his small force was brought under enemy fire from all directions, but he staunchly encouraged his officers and men to hold their ground, despite the fact that he was again wounded, defeating all enemy efforts to dislodge them, until ordered to withdraw late that afternoon. By his heroic actions throughout the entire engagement Lieutenant Colonel Landry was an inspiration to his command and reflected the highest credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Robert D. Lapham, Major (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy in action against enemy forces from 8 December 1941 to 7 May 1945, in the Philippine Islands. Major Lapham, selected to organize throughout the Philippine Islands prior to the fall of Bataan, continued his activities during the period of enemy occupation. Breaking up his unit into smaller bands in order to cover more territory, he operated in the provinces of Tarlac, Pangasinan, and Nueva Ecija collecting arms and volunteers and eliminating outlaw bands, his organization so effectively protected the civilian population from the common enemy and roving bandits, that he was able to enlist the aid of thousands of Filipinos for his forces. Establishing radio contact with General Headquarters, Southwest Pacific Area, in June 1944, he regularly submitted intelligence reports covering central Luzon. In the fall of 1944 he was able to enlarge his intelligence activities and increase his combat strength through supplies and equipment which came through the submarine service. Early in 1945, he conducted offensive operations against the enemy, cutting communication lines, ambushing troop convoys, and attacking garrisons and supply dumps. This fighting continued until the Americans had passed through the area occupied by the guerrilla troops, after which his entire force of approximately 12,000 men was made available to the Sixth Army. In the face of many hazards and extreme dangers, Major Lapham was able to organize and unify a strong guerrilla force in Luzon and by skillful planning, timely activities, and ceaseless efforts, he contributed in a material way to the success of operations in the Philippine Islands. His inspiring leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Lee (17040250), Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 610th Tank Destroyer Battalion, in action against enemy forces on 7 January 1945, in the vicinity of Dahl, Luxembourg. Sergeant Lee commanded a tank destroyer supporting the defense of Dahl, Luxembourg. He knocked out two enemy tanks with direct fire from his destroyer and was wounded in the action. Refusing to be evacuated, he led his crew into action the following day against a number of enemy tanks, destroying three of them and forcing the remainder to withdraw. When a group of enemy infantrymen attacked his destroyer, this intrepid soldier dismounted and engaged them with an automatic rifle, killing several and routing the others. Then, when pinned by enemy machine gun fire he fearlessly crawled to within fifteen feet of the position and killed the crew with hand grenades. Sergeant Lee was killed by artillery fire while returning to his vehicle, but his courage and supreme devotion to duty will live on as an inspiration to his comrades. During a company advance, a leading squad was suddenly fired upon from the right rear by a strong force of Germans. In the subsequent fire fight, the enemy succeeded in cutting of the squad from the remainder of the company. The company commander prepared to send a patrol to relieve the surrounded squad, but Private Lempke sought and obtained permission to attempt the task alone. Making his was along a dry river bed and through a series of ditches, he suddenly spotted a German soldier armed with a machine pistol. Private Lempke killed the German and took his weapon. Continuing his advance he observed another German and shot him with the machine pistol. Skillfully maneuvering toward the beleaguered squad, he located and killed three more enemy soldiers, to clear all enemy resistance from the rear and right rear of the squad. Finally reaching the three remaining members of the squad, he led them safely to the company. The initiative and aggressive fighting spirit displayed by Private Lempke prevented the capture of three fellow soldiers. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Lev (39252131), Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division in action against enemy forces on 23 September 1944, at Veghel, Holland. On that date, Private First Class Lev's platoon was protecting the left flank of the defense when the enemy attacked that flank with three half-tracks, one Mark IV tank, and infantry troops. The platoon was forced to withdraw, after suffering heavy casualties, but Private First Class Lev elected to remain and cover the withdrawal of the platoon. Although exposed to heavy enemy fire, he fired his rocket launcher at the leading half-track and killed four of the enemy. At this time, the fire from the tank became a very serious threat to the withdrawing platoon, since its fire was being directed by the commander from an open turret. Realizing this, Private First Class Lev killed the tank commander and halted the advance of the tank. He then returned and gave invaluable information to friendly artillery whose effective fire disrupted the enemy attack. In a later action, while moving his machine gun to a better position in order to deliver effective fire on the enemy, he was mortally wounded. Private First Class Lev's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 101st Airborne Division, and the United States Army.

On 12 September 1944, Company "R" Infantry, with which Sergeant LINES was serving as a platoon leader, was advancing against the enemy near LUNEVILLE, FRANCE. When a rocket- launcher team of the company drove five enemy tanks into the woods, Sergeant LINES bravely maneuvered his way after them, carrying a sound-power telephone, creeping and crawling forward under heavy enemy machine-gun fire. He climbed a tree from which he directed artillery fire against the enemy tanks and in order to escape detection from an enemy machine-gun nest within thirty yards of his position, it was necessary that he whisper his fire directions into the telephone. His observation and fire direction were so accurate that three of the enemy tanks were destroyed and the others forced to withdraw. Sergeant LINES remained in his precarious position throughout the action, ignoring the danger from friendly artillery shells falling around him, His conspicuous courage and his supreme, heroic devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States.

After landing by parachute before dawn on D-Day and joining a composite group which proceeded to carry out a battalion mission, Private Lockwood and two comrades served as an outpost in a building on the edge of Guetteville. When a battalion of German infantry, reinforced by tanks, approached from the west and placed machine guns and mortars in position, those three valiant men immediately opened fire on the enemy. Ordered to leave the post, they determined to hold out until the 30 men in the town had withdrawn. Private Lockwood assisted in holding the hostile force at bay for two hours, killing 15 Germans and wounding many others. His voluntary and courageous action delayed the enemy sufficiently to permit the main body of parachute troops to establish defensive positions to the east from which they were able to deny overwhelming German forces the opportunity of crossing the Merderet River. Private Lockwood is missing as a result of this action. Loe (17135335), Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy as a member of Company I, 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 10 June 1944, near Orbetello, Italy. While advancing to clear a route for armor, Private First Class Loe's platoon became pinned down by machine gun, automatic pistol, rifle and intermittent artillery fire. At this time a German Mark IV tank appeared, and approaching the platoon's position, opened fire with machine guns and cannon. In the face of heavy fire from both the enemy tank and infantry, Private First Class Loe took his automatic rifle, boldly moved to a position fifty yards forward of his platoon, and opened fire on the approaching tank. The volume of fire he directed at the tank caused the vehicle to halt momentarily and close its ports. Discovered by the tank's crew members, Private First Class Loe was subjected to a burst of machine gun fire which hit his pack and severed his BAR belt from his waist. Refusing to give ground to the advancing tank, he continued to fire. Another machine gun burst from the tank struck Private First Class Loe, mortally wounding him. Still, he refused to leave his position and continued firing at the enemy armor. His action enabled his platoon to reorganize and send a bazooka team forward to compel the tank to withdraw. Private First Class Loe's display of indomitable courage and fighting determination will remain as a perpetual inspiration to all those who witnessed his valorous deeds. The next morning he directed artillery and mortar fire on the enemy, and when the barrage ceased, led his men in a bayonet charge. The company rushed the pillboxes, surprising the enemy, and destroyed them. He boldly charged through the wire toward the enemy, and with accurate rifle fire killed the machine-gunner and forced the rest of the crew to withdraw. Private First Class Low's platoon was pinned down by machine gun fire from a bunker about 75 yards to his right. He burned up his BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) by shooting at the pill boxes, and then picked up a comrade's M-1 rifle. The bunker consisted of two pill boxes and Low grabbed the M-1 and ran toward the nearest one. He pulled out a hand grenade and threw it in causing sixteen Germans to come out and surrender. He ordered them to put their hands on their heads and then moved towards the second bunker. Soon Private Low had 32 German prisoners. Since he had temporarily separated from his own company, he marched the soldiers to F company where he turned them over to an officer. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to John Lycas (0-446927), First Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 11 July 1943, in Sicily. When the enemy hurled an attack of 30 to 40 tanks against the recently established beachhead, First Lieutenant Lycas, together with several other officers and men became separated by this attack. Lieutenant Lycas then left his concealed position and made his way over hundreds of yards of heavily shelled terrain in the path of the approaching tanks to reach an abandoned anti-tank gun. Lieutenant Lycas engaged the enemy at close range and continued to fire even after the tanks had encircled his position. He remained at this position until his ammunition ran out and then made his way back over the shell-swept terrain to his unit and materially assisted in their reorganization and led them in a victorious attack. First Lieutenant Lycas' intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Lynch (31241406), Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 610th Tank Destroyer Battalion, in action against enemy forces on 15 September 1944. During a counter-attack by the enemy, one of a platoon of advancing Sherman tanks was hit and set on fire. Private Lynch left the comparative security of his dug-in position beside his tank destroyer gun and courageously went to the aid of the crew members trapped in the burning tank. He climbed into the tank and extricated two wounded and dazed men moments before the ammunition in the tank exploded. Private Lynch coolly administered first aid to the men he had rescued and then braved intense enemy sniper fire to evacuate them to an aid station. Private First Class Lynch's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
