Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class: For gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Corpsman with the 5th Marines, 2d Division, A.E.F., on World War I at Champagne, France.

The Navy Cross is awarded to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Alfred A. Barrett, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the U.S. Marines at the front on October 3 and 4, 1918, when he went constantly into exposed positions under heavy machine gun and shell fire to aid the wounded until he was himself severely wounded.
