Corporal Tilghman, with Joseph A. Darges and Howard Childs, Corporals, and Herman L. McLeod, Private, all of the same company, were prominent in the attack on enemy machine-gun positions in the Bois de Belleau on June 6 and 8, 1918. They were foremost in their company and at all times acquitted themselves with such distinction that they were an example for the remainder of their command.
