The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Alonzo Smith, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 27 October 1864, while serving with Company C, 7th Michigan Infantry, in action at Hatcher’s Run, Virginia, for capture of flag of 26th North Carolina Infantry (Confederate States of America), while outside his lines far from his comrades.
