Andrew Kozicki

By direction of the President, under provisions of the Act of Congress approved 9 July 1918 (Bulletin 43, WD, 1918), a Silver Star is awarded by the Commanding General, 40th Infantry Division, to Sergeant Andrew Kozicki, 35315564, Infantry, United States Army. For gallantry in action near Bamban, Luzon, P.I., on 17 February 1945. In an assault on an enemy held hill, Sergeant Kozicki was directed to emplace a machine gun for the security of his company’s flank. Shortly after the position was occupied the enemy launched a determined counterattack supported by intense machine gun and mortar fire. The troops were ordered to take up a position behind a protective crest while Sergeant Kozicki remained to cover their withdrawal. Alone, Sergeant Kozicki delivered such devastating fire that many casualties were inflicted and the enemy attack disorganized. The interval provided by his determined stand permitted his comrades to reorganize and renew the assault. The company’s success in regaining lost ground and securing its objective was due largely to Sergeant Kozicki’s unyielding fortitude.
