The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Arnold Dee Godbey, Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 67th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action at Chateau-Thierry, France, on June 6, 1918. Corporal Godbey volunteered to rescue wounded men from a field swept by machine-gun fire and snipers. Upon gaining permission to perform this duty, he bravely continued the hazardous work, with the aid of other volunteers, until all had been rescued.
