The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain (Infantry) Augustus Merrill, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 2 April 1865, while serving with Company B, 1st Maine Veteran Infantry, in action at Petersburg, Virginia. With six men, Captain Merrill captured 69 Confederate prisoners and recaptured several soldiers who had fallen into the enemy’s hands.
