The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Billie W. Belt, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Bouillonville, France on September 24, 1918. When an enemy shell struck a truck loaded with gasoline, killing two men and wounding several others, Corporal Belt rushed to the burning truck, in spite of the danger from the exploding bedons of gasoline, pulled one of the men from beneath the burning truck and extinguished the flames on his clothing. He then returned and attempted to rescue another man but was unable to do so.
