Calvin L. Ellis

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Calvin L. Ellis (6892887), Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, in France. Technical Sergeant Ellis’ intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Calvin L. Ellis (6892887), Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Matour, Tunisia, on 28 April 1943. When besieging enemy forces threatened his battalion’s security, Technical Sergeant (the Staff Sergeant) Ellis, disregarding intense artillery, mortar, and machine-gun fire, boldly led his platoon into an extremely exposed position and covered the battalion’s flank. His fearlessness, gallantry, and unhesitating action enabled his unit to launch a successful attack.
