The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Carl O. Kingsbury, Hospital Apprentice, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action on the morning of April 13, 1918. Hospital Apprentice Kingsbury displayed commendable action in the immediate care and attention incident to the evacuation of more than 100 casualties following the gas-shell bombardment on the morning of April 13, 1918, after he himself had been subjected to gas. He worked incessantly, disregarding his own symptoms, until he had to be evacuated.
