U.S. Army
World War II
By direction of the President, under the provisions of AR 600-45, 22 September 1943, as amended, the Silver Star Medal is awarded to Major Carroll B. Smith (then Captain), 0 425 826, Infantry, Army of the United States, for gallantry in action, while serving with the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, on 1 March 1945. Major Smith distinguished himself by his heroism, initiative, and brilliant devotion to duty. Completely disregarding his personal safety and exposing himself to enemy fire, he neutralized two 500 Kilogram aerial bombs planted on a bridge which was very important for the division’s advance on the city of Munchen-Gladbach, Germany. Major Smith’s great courage contributed materially to the capture of that city and to the success of military operations, reflecting the highest credit upon him and the armed forces of the United States.
