    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Charles Butler, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Ardeuil, France, September 29, 1918. With three other soldiers, Private Butler crawled 200 yards ahead of our lines under violent machine-gun fire and rescued an officer who was lying mortally wounded in a shell hole.
