World War I
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Charles Emile Daune, Second Lieutenant, French Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Mihiel, France, September 12, 1918. When the advance of his battalion was held up by a hostile strong point, well fortified and protected by barbed-wire entanglements, Lieutenant Daune, at the head of his platoon, led his men forward, forcing an opening through the wire, and overcame the enemy’s resistance, capturing 158 prisoners, including two officers and 15 machine guns.
